What Is the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)? Can Your Store Sell in Gemini and Google's AI Mode?

The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), announced by Google in January 2026, is an open standard that aims to let AI agents talk to stores in a common language from product discovery to checkout. What it is, who built it, what it means for store owners and what we can't be sure of.

What Is the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)? Can Your Store Sell in Gemini and Google's AI Mode?

In brief: The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is an open source standard for agentic commerce announced by Google in January 2026 and developed with commerce companies including Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart. As relayed by SD Times (12 January 2026), UCP offers “a common language and primitives” for the commerce journey among consumer surfaces (such as AI Mode in Google Search and Gemini), businesses and payment providers. The aim: to remove the need for businesses to build a separate connection for every surface they want to reach. Four elements: a single integration point for all consumer surfaces; a shared language for discovery, capability schemas and transport bindings; an architecture that can grow as new agentic experiences emerge; and a security-first approach with tokenised payments and verifiable credentials. According to secondary sources, the store declares its capabilities through a standard manifest and remains the Merchant of Record. Important note: I do not have Google's own developer documentation for UCP's details and adoption; what follows rests on SD Times's account of the primary announcement and on secondary sources. What does UCP solve?

Today, when a business wants to show its products on different shopping surfaces (search, chat assistants, marketplaces) it must build a separate integration for each surface. As agents multiply, that number grows. According to SD Times, UCP aims to be a single abstraction layer between those surfaces and business back ends.

Think of it as a “like HTTP” common language: shared rules for how agents discover products, ask for prices, create carts and start the payment process.

Who built it?

According to SD Times, Google developed UCP in collaboration with commerce companies including Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart. Secondary sources say more than 20 global companies have endorsed it, including payment providers like Visa, Mastercard, Stripe and PayPal; I could not verify that from the primary source.

The four key elements

  1. One integration point for all consumer surfaces.
  2. A shared language for discovery, capability schemas and transport bindings.
  3. An extensible architecture that can grow as new agentic experiences arrive.
  4. A security-first approach: tokenised payments and verifiable credentials.

What does it mean for a store?

According to secondary sources (verify details in the primary documentation):

  • The store declares its capabilities in a standard manifest (one source places it at a path like /.well-known/ucp).
  • Capabilities are defined in separate modules such as catalogue, checkout and orders.
  • The business remains the Merchant of Record and exposes its inventory to agents in Google Search and Gemini.
  • Shopify says store owners can sell in Google's AI Mode and Gemini from the Shopify admin; but according to one source the rollout is still in progress and depends on retailer adoption and supported integrations.
  • The standard is cited as published openly on GitHub under Apache 2.0 (SD Times does not name the licence).

The SD Times article does not explain how stores take part; it also gives no version, access or release date and points to a Google Developers Blog post.

UCP and other protocols

Don't confuse these two related concepts:

ProtocolFocus
UCPThe whole agentic commerce flow: discovery, consideration, checkout, post-purchase
MCP (Model Context Protocol)A general protocol for connecting AI applications to tools and data: our MCP guide

Some secondary sources compare UCP to Google's earlier payment-focused AP2 protocol and to OpenAI's ACP; I have not verified those comparisons.

What should a store owner do?

Whether UCP spreads, and how important it becomes in your sector, isn't clear yet. Low-risk preparation is possible:

  1. Fix your product data: Make titles, descriptions, variants, prices, stock and policies accurate and complete.
  2. Add structured data: Product markup (schema.org) and clean sitemaps: our preparation guide.
  3. Watch your platform: If you use a platform like Shopify, UCP support will be brought by the platform; follow announcements.
  4. If you're on custom infrastructure: Keep your product, stock and order APIs clean and documented. For integration principles see our system integration guide.
  5. Clarify payment and return policies: Agents will read this information and relay it to users.
  6. Measurement readiness: Analytics that can tell agent-sourced traffic and orders apart.
  7. Legal and privacy review: Clarify notice and allocation of responsibility for personal data and payment flows through agents with your adviser.

What we're not sure about regarding UCP

  • When and at what scale it will apply in Türkiye and in Turkish marketplaces.
  • Which payment providers will support it in which countries.
  • The standard's real effect on sales.
  • The detailed technical specification (I couldn't reach the primary source).

Because of these uncertainties, saying “move to UCP right away” would be wrong; data quality and infrastructure readiness help in any case.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who developed UCP?

According to SD Times, Google, in collaboration with commerce companies including Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart.

Is UCP open source?

SD Times says “open source” but doesn't state the licence. Secondary sources say Apache 2.0; verify in the official repository.

How does my store support UCP?

It depends on your platform. Platforms like Shopify say they will offer support from their own admin; for custom infrastructure you need to study the primary documentation.

Are UCP and MCP the same thing?

No. MCP is a general protocol connecting AI applications to tools and data; UCP focuses on the commerce flow.

Can it be used in Türkiye?

I couldn't verify that. Availability depends on regional support from Google and payment providers.

Conclusion

UCP is an open standard led by Google that aims to reduce the need for a separate integration for every store in agentic shopping. Its spread and effect are still uncertain; preparation is cheap and multi-purpose: clean product data, structured markup and solid integrations. First step: list the most frequent sources of error in your product data (price, stock, variant).
